Shortly said 3GP is a MPEG-4 video format mostly used by mobile devices. 3rd Genereation Partnership Project is the new world wide standard for playback, recording and delivery (delivery through connecting techniques like Bluetooth or MMS) of 3GP files. Apple’s QuickTime and Realplayer (Windows), for example, can also play 3GP movie files.
Known extensions and names for and related to 3GP are:
3GP, 3GPP, 3G2, 3GPP2, MPEG-4, H.263.
For the audio handling:
AAC, AMR, QCELP.
Some examples of mobile phone brands who produce phones that can either playback and/or record 3GP files are:
Alcatel, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Panasonic, Sanyo, Sharp, Samsung, Siemens Mobile, Sony Ericsson and Toshiba.
